1). [10 points] How would you define quality for the following products? Explain in 1-2 sentences. Suggest one appropriate quality control tool (select one from 7 QC tools) for each and describe how the QC tool is applied:
a) A gym
b) Spaghetti sauce
c) Toothpaste
2). [10 points] The principal of an elementary school is trying to do a performance analysis of 5th grade exam grading process. There are 6 home room classes in 5th grade. Each class has 30 students. Each student faces 3 exams during the school year (assume that there were no absences for exams). It was found that 4 exams were graded incorrectly during the school year.
a) What is the epmo metric for exam grading process?
b) What sigma level does it correspond to? (You may need to use the Excel template).
3). [10 points] Describe three recent situations in which you were directly affected by poor product or service quality. Suggest one statistical process control chart for each of the above situations which can improve the quality and explain how the chart can be used to improve the quality.
4). [10 points] A quality control inspector has taken four samples with five observations each at the Beautiful Shampoo Company, measuring the volume of shampoo per bottle. The average range for the four samples is 0.4 ounces and the average mean of the observations is 19.8 ounces. Compute the control limits for x-bar and R-charts for the bottling operation.
5). [20 points] A production manager at Ultra Clean Dishwashing Company is monitoring tof the company’s production process. There has been concern relative to the quality of operation in accurately filling the 16 ounces of dishwashing liquid. The product is designed for fill level of 16.00 + 0.30. The company collected the following sample data on the production process:
a) Calculate Mean, Average Range, Upper and lower control limits for x-Bar and R charts. Show
all calculations. (You may use Excel tools to verify your answers).
b) Plot the xBar and R charts. (You may use Excel tools to plot the charts.)
c) Based on the xBar and R charts, discuss whether the process mean and range in statistical
control.
d) Do you think this process is capable of meeting the design standard?
6) [20 points] A tire manufacturer has been concerned about the number of defective tires found recently. In order to evaluate the true magnitude of the problem, a production manager selected 20 random samples of 50 units each for inspection. The number of defective tires found in each sample are as follows:
a) Calculate the p-bar, standard deviation, upper and lower control limits. Show all calculations (You may use Excel tools to verify your answers).
b) Plot the p-chart. (You may use Excel tools to plot the charts.)
c) Based on the p-chart, discuss whether the process in statistical control or not
